Spinach Pastries Recipe

Spinach Pastries Recipe is a delicious appetizer with spinach, carrot and broccoli stalks encased in a homemade rich short crust pastry shells. These shells can be varied using filo pastry or puff pastry or any other veggies of your choice. Feta cheese can also be added to round off the taste!

Spinach Pastries recipe will entice even the pickiest of eaters. Spinach does not usually appeal to children but if stuffed or filled in rich short crust pastry shells, kids seem to love them.

I have used a ratio of 1:1 whole wheat flour and all purpose flour in this recipe. You could use only all purpose flour for the rich short crust pastry. This appetizer comes together in less than 20 minutes if you have rich short crust pastry made beforehand or are using frozen shells.

Ingredients:

  • Veggies: Spinach, onion, carrot and broccoli stalks
  • Spices: Cumin, ground black peppercorn and chili flake
  • Pastry: Rich short crust – substitute short crust with filo or puff pastry

How to make Spinach Pastries using my recipe:

  1. Prepare the ingredients for the filling. Remove the homemade rich short crust pastry from the refrigerator or thaw the frozen pastry shells.

2. Heat a pan and drizzle olive oil. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant for a few seconds. Add the onion and sauté for two minutes on medium heat or until tender.

3. Toss in the broccoli stalks and carrot. Add the spices and the salt. Cook for a minute with a tablespoon of water.

4. Add the spinach and sauté until wilted or for a minute. Turn off the heat and let the filling cool.

5. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. On a floured board, roll out the pastry dough and cut into rounds using a fluted or round cutter. Place each round into the hollow of a muffin tray.

6. Spoon the cooled filling.

7. Cut a small heart with a heart cutter and place each heart on top of the filling after firmly pressing it down.

8. Bake for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Tips:

  1. Cool filling prior to spooning in the pastry shells.
  2. Chill the pastry dough before rolling out.
  3. Use ice cold water for the rich short crust pastry.

Serving suggestion:

This recipe for the Spinach Pastries can be served on their own as appetizers, with Spicy Chicken Wings or with a Carrot Squash Soup.

Storage:

The filling in the Spinach Pastries recipe can be frozen in airtight boxes for later usage. The rich short crust pastry can be frozen in airtight boxes for three months.
